Richard loved hunting and fishing, and often had a house full of friends and family through hunting season. He made lifelong friends with the people he worked with. He spent the majority of his career employed by R&S Construction, GBA, and Doug O’Bryan Contracting. He was involved in the construction of many schools, buildings and roads across the reservation. He specialized in dirt preparation and finishing. Richard started his career in construction with his friend Leo Lowe.
He married his lifelong love Cindy Evenson on October 6, 1973, and they had two sons Thad and Falle. Richard’s first marriage was to Melva Hoblit in 1965, and they had two daughters, Maneen and Tory. While in the service, he received the Sharpshooter Badge (rifle), the Expert Badge (3.5 rocket launcher) and the Good Conduct Medal. He joined the US Army in 1957 and enjoyed serving until 1960. He attended Pleasant Valley School where his mom Marie was a teacher.
He grew up on the family farm north of Vetal. Richard was born on April 16,1937 to Alex and Marie (Jelly) Baker in Gordon, Nebr. passed away at his home on November 5, 2023. Richard Daniel Baker, age 86, of Martin, S.D.
